The
Indian Ocean Earthquake on December 26, 2004 was
a magnitude 9.0 undersea earthquake which
generated tsunamis that caused one of the
deadliest natural disasters in modern history.
A
tsunami (pronounced tsoo-NAH-mee), commonly
referred to as a tidal wave, is a series of
waves, called a wave train, generated in a body
of water by a pulsating or abrupt disturbance
that vertically displaces the water column.
The
tsunamis generated by the Boxing Day earthquake
devastated the shores of Indonesia, Sri Lanka,
India, Thailand and other countries with waves
of up to 15 m (50 feet) in height. The loss of
life and destruction of property was staggering.
The
immediate need now is for food, clean water, medical
aid, clothing and shelter for the multitudes left
homeless. You can help by donating money through
many well-managed Christian relief organizations
working in the area.
