CRY 2 Him in Ottawa
- photo by Cara Henry“CRY 2 Him” draws thousands of youth in Ottawa
by Cara HenryOn a very hot and muggy Saturday, July 15 over five thousand Canadians from nearly every province and denomination joined together under the Peace Tower on Parliament Hill for an all day prayer session. The event, primarily planned for youth and young adults but attended by people of all ages, was called “The CRY 2 Him,” and its purpose was to pray for significant change in the moral and spiritual climate of Canada.
The celebration was organized by Faytene Kryskow, founder and director of 4 My Canada, a faith-based non-denominational group of young adults and leaders in Canada. The members and leaders of this group come from various Christian perspectives, ethnicities and social groups, but share a common heart to walk in unity for a greater purpose.
The CRY 2 Him event was a sequel to a similar gathering that took place in 2002 which was organized by Steve Osmond, Pastor of First Assembly Church in Calgary, Alberta.
In August of last year Kryskow led a team of young Christians aged sixteen to thirty-five across the nation on a tour called “The Siege.” For sixteen days the Siege Tour visited ten cities in six provinces and held rallies on the steps of the Legislative Assemblies from Victoria to Toronto. They had thirty-six meetings with politicians and hosted eleven church rallies. During this tour, Kryskow felt led by the Lord to resurrect The CRY event.
After consulting with a team of advisers including Patricia King, Rob and Fran Parker and Alistair Petrie, it was confirmed that the CRY 2 Him would be held on July 15th, 2006.
During this year’s gathering there were several corporate worship sets led by various worship leaders from different parts of Canada. The sets were accompanied by a dance team and took place in between prayer sessions which were led by 4 My Canada members, along with leaders of various ethnic groups.
There was a strong focus on representing the different people groups of Canada, and the atmosphere was very much one of blessing and honoring one another.
All prayer and worship sessions were translated into French when possible, and were led by leaders representing Catholic, Messianic, French, English, Chinese, Inuit and First Nations – each bringing a special and unique flavor to the event.
“Visitors to Parliament Hill usually come to take in the sights and the sounds, and yesterday was no exception,” reported Jean Levac in The Ottawa Citizen the following day. “Only this time they got more than they bargained for.”
Throughout the day, Kryskow led the crowds in targeted prayer, addressing and praying for some specific “Battle Points” of particular importance in Canada right now. These include legislation introduced in June to raise the age of sexual consent from 14 to 16, a private member’s bill to make abortion illegal after twenty weeks, and for revisiting the legal definition of marriage.
Near the end of the day-long prayer session the entire crowd was challenged to stand to their feet and corporately recite a commitment to sexual purity and to uphold the values of life and marriage as God has defined them.
It was a powerful demonstration, and afterwards Kryskow challenged the crowds to not be hypocritical but to live their lives in such a manner that would reinforce the things they were praying for that day.
Kryskow also reminded those gathered that the battle would not be won in a single day, and urged Christians to be a people of influence in their careers and communities and to take a stand on these very important issues by arranging meetings with their MP’s, voting and interacting with the media. The CRY 2 Him day of prayer ended with a worship concert and people left with a spirit of joy and anticipation for what is to come.
