On Friday, November 14, in aid of
Operation
Christmas
Child, 51 EMS ambulances from Central & Southern
Alberta, along with helicopters from STARS Air
Ambulance and Calgary Police Service’s HAWC1, visited
49 schools throughout Calgary to collect shoeboxes
assembled by school children. Over 20,000
shoeboxes destined for needy children overseas were
transported by EMS volunteers along a parade route
through downtown Calgary to the Samaritan’s Purse
warehouse. This is the ninth year Calgary EMS
employees have volunteered to participate in the OCC
program. Calgary paramedic Dennis McAreavy has
spearheaded this initiative. Now entering its
tenth year, Operation Christmas Child has distributed
more than 18 million shoe box gifts – packed with
toys, candy, school supplies, hygiene items and
hand-written notes of encouragement – to children in
112 countries around the world.

for a Christmas Dinner and someone standing
outside encouraged him to come in.
He
decided to have one last meal, but found himself
among hundreds of other lonely people who were
enjoying the festivities and new-found friends.
